Preamble to the Constitution of The American Legion
For God and Country
We associate
ourselves together for the following purposes:
To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America; to
maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent
Americanism; to preserve the memories and incidents of our associations in
the Great Wars; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the
community, state and nation; to combat the autocracy of both the classes and
the masses; to make right the master of might; to promote peace and goodwill
on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice,
freedom and democracy; to consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our
devotion to mutual helpfulness.
Eligibility
To
join the American Legion, you must have served honorably on active federal
service in the Army, Navy, Marine Corp, Air Force, or Coast Guard during any
of these periods of conflict:
April 6, 1917 to November 11, 1918 (World War I)
December 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946 (World War II—includes certain
Merchant Marine service)
June 25, 1950 to January 31, 1955 (Korean War)
February 28, 1961 to May 7, 1975 (Vietnam War)
August 24, 1982 to July 31, 1984 (Lebanon/Grenada)
December 20, 1989 to January 31, 1990 (Operation Just Cause - Panama)
August 2, 1990 to today (Operation Desert Shield/Storm/War on Terrorism)
A
copy of your DD214 or other discharge paperwork showing dates and character
of service is required at application.

Kendall Christensen was awarded a Life
Membership in The American Legion.
A Life Membership is the highest award a Post
can give one of their members.
Owen Lloyd was honored as the Legionnaire of
the Year.
Congrats to both of you.
Hartman Post 84 celebrates American
Legion Birthday and Awards Night
On Saturday, March 26th 2011 Hartman Post 84 celebrated the
American Legions 92nd birthday. The American Legion was founded by the
veterans of the First World War March 15, 16, 17, 1919.
The American Legion was founded of the four pillars of service which are
Child Welfare, Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, Americanism and National
Security.
Hartman Unit 84 president Patty Landkamer presented Hartman Post 84 Commander
Marcel Giroux and the membership with the birthday cake. Following the meal
served by the Boy Scouts and the birthday address by Dave Salak the following
awards was presented.
Fifty year membership awards were presented to Robert C. Carrig, James S.
Gerhold,
Dr. Harold Lange, Norman H. Loseke, Dennis W. Nagengast, Bernart E. Schaf,
James D. Schroeder, Harold Siebler, Leon Williams and Vernon L. Zimmerman.
Sixty year membership award presented to Leroy Schumacher.
Each year Hartman Post 84 honors a member of law enforcement with the Law
Officer of the Year Award. This year’s award was presented to Trooper L. Blum
of the Nebraska State Patrol.
The Volunteer of the Year was presented to Luther Bakenhus for his many years
of volunteer service to the American Legion.
Legionnaire of the Year was awarded to Hartman Post 84 Commander Marcel
Giroux for his steadfast dedication to the programs of The American Legion.
Commander Giroux makes it a practice to attend the funerals of American
Legion members and the funerals of those who have given their lives to our
Country.
The Life Membership was awarded to Jim Wieser. Jim has been a long time
member of not only The American Legion but also the Post Honor Guard. Jim has
been a faithful member of the Honor Guard for over 24 years and has served on
909 ceremonies. Jim has worked the chicken, fish and hamburger feeds for many
years.
District 7 Roundup
Lots of valuable
information was shared at this years Roundup. Each of the legion family had
their own meeting this year. Even the Sons had a meeting in preparation for a
new district 7 organization. Many reports from all the committees.

2017 Hartman Post Members attended the Funeral of Nebraskas latest Fallen
Hero. Lt Mark Noziska was killed in action Monday, August 30, 2010, as a result
of a road side bomb while supporting combat operations in Afganistan. Mark Noziska,
24, was born in Grand Island and lived and attended High School in Papillion, Nebraska.
Caitlyn Molczyk,
a junior at Columbus High School, won the Nebraska American
Legion’s state oratorical contest, held in Norfolk Jan. 9 during the
Legion’s annual mid-year conference. She recently won the local contest at
Columbus American Legion Post 84 and advanced to the state contest by
winning the district and area oratorical contests at Brainerd and Albion.
Caitlyn is the daughter of Doug and Lynette
Molczyk of Columbus. Her speech instructor is
Quinten Lyon.
The state winner will compete in the
national contest, to be held at Indiana University-Purdue. The three-day
competition starts April 9, with the final contest on April 11.
The state winner is awarded $1,000 as well
as a $1,500 scholarship. Awards of $600, $400, and $200 go to the
second, third and four place contestants.
The national winner is awarded
a $18,000 scholarship, with scholarships of
$16,000 and $14,000 going to the second and third place contestants.
The American
Legion inaugurated the annual speech competition in 1938.

Caitlyn Molczyk,
a junior at Columbus High School, has been named winner of the 2009 local
Oratorical Contest sponsored by American Legion Post 84 in Columbus.
She gave a prepared speech on the
Constitution and then was graded on an extemporaneous 3-5 minute speech on a
subject selected by drawing. Her speech coach is
Quinten Lyon.
Caitlyn, daughter of Doug and Lynette
Molczyk, now advances to the Legion’s district
contest on Nov. 15 at Brainard. The Area B
contest will be held in Albion on Dec. 13 and the state contest is scheduled
for Jan. 9, 2010, in Norfolk.
The state winner will compete in the
national contest, to be held at Indiana University-Purdue. The three-day
competition starts April 9, with the final contest on April 11.
By winning the local contest, Caitlyn
received a $50 U.S. savings bond. Winner of the District contest gets a
$200 prize, with $150 going to the second-place winner and $100 for third

12 Post 84 Members attend Dist 7 Roundup
Oct. 25, 2009 A good time was had by all that
attended the Dist 7 Roundup in Dwight, NE. People making the trip were: Post
Commander Marcel Giroux, Larry Adams, Carroll Mohlman, Von Dell Mohlman, Dean Pearsoll, Mike Landkamer
Patty Landkamer, Dave Oppliger, and
Riders members;
Owen Lloyd, Vern Martinsen, Gaylen Johannes, and Bronson.
Post Members attend Grella Funeral
Oct. 3, 2009 we
had 8 soles from the Hartman 84 family, brave the cool nasty day to attend Don Grellas Funeral. Spec
Don Grella, Army Special Forces, MIA/KIA, 28 DEC 1965, in the Central
highlands of Vietnam. He has been Missing In Action ever since. This past
Summer remains that were found were confirmed as being SPC5 Grella. Spec Grella would have been 68 years old now. The
Hartman Post had 8 members; Post Commander Marcel Giroux, 2nd
Vice Commander Dick Liebschwager, Carroll Mohlman, Von Dell Mohlman, Don
Rullo, Wayne Jacobsen, Dean Pearsoll, Mike Landkamer, on the Flag line. Great Job
to all of you in the Legion Family! After the funeral the Laurel
Volunteer Fire Department invited the riders and veterans to the fire hall
for lunch. We ate sloppy joes and hotdogs for no charge.

March 15, 2009 the American Legion
Columbus, Nebraska Hartman Post #84 held its Birthday and Honors night.
The evening started with the presentation of Birthday cake to Ed Cerny,
Post 84 Commander by Patty Landkamer President of the Auxiliary. After a
great Dinner served by the Boy Scouts the Birthday Address was given by
Sgt. Jill Kinzer and SPC Kelly Kinzer. The Law Officer of the Year went to
Darren Brown Columbus PD. Presented by William Gumm Cheif of Police
Columbus. Fireman of the Year for the Department of NE won by Frank
Swartzer Columbus VFD. Ed Cerny Post Commander gave out the award. Special
Award Honorary Post Commander Columbus NE. Am/Leg to Rev. Dr. Paul Rowoldt
Columbus. A Special Award Certificate of Appreciation was given to Ardes
Simms Columbus, by Patty Landkamer Unit 84 President. Legionnaire of the
Year Vern Bechmann and Volunteer of the Year to Dean Pearsoll both
presented by Larry Adams present past Commander Columbus, NE. Life
Membership to Dave Duren Columbus, NE by Mike Landkamer Natl. Vice
Commander. 50 year Member to L. Robert Kreizinger Columbus, NE and 60 year
Member to Hylan Levos Columbus, NE.
Mid Year Conference
This year at the mid year conference Mike
Landkamer - National Vice Commander spoke and was given a navy challenge
Coin by the Department Commander Bill Crosier.

Congratulations Get Together
Saturday Sept. 27, 2008 there was a congratulation get
together for Michael Landkamer our new National Vice Commander, he was
accompanied by his wife Patty Landkamer Unit 84 President.
Attended by members of all 4 branches of The American Legion family, Post
Commander Ed Cerny thanked Mike for his dedication to The American Legion
and stated that he was sure Mike would do an excellent job in his new
position. Mike's brother Jerry Landkamer Alternate National Executive Committeeman from Nebraska
presented Mike with an Admiralship in the great Navy of Nebraska. Mike
showed videos of his brothers nomination speech and what he learned in his
public relations class in Indianapolis, he brought us up to date on
membership and the news from Capitol Hill.

Happy Birthday Post 84 of The American Legion
Pearl
Harbor Survivor - Art Gersib
Born
Aug. 1919 Art joined the Army to get out of the CCC. While in the service he
was stationed at Scofield Barracks in Hawaii. Stationed at Scofield on
Dec.7th 1941, Art became one of the Pearl Harbor Survivor. As a member of
the engineering corps, he also made a landing on Saipan and helped rebuild a
fighter air field, so it could handle B 29 Bombers. With all his luck though
the WW II he was mustard out on Fri. the 13th.
